There’s no magic number of guests that makes a wedding “small”. For some couples, it might be 20 people. For others, 40 or 50 feels intimate.

I’d concentrate less on the number and more on how the venue will actually feel on your wedding day.

A venue can look beautiful online, but if it’s designed primarily for large weddings, you might find that a smaller guest list makes the space feel a little lost.

One of the things I love about photographing smaller weddings is that there tends to be more breathing room.

You’re not trying to squeeze every photograph into a five-minute window. You’re not spending the whole drinks reception organising enormous groups of people. And you can usually take a little time away together without feeling like you’ve abandoned your guests.

That means your photographs can be much more natural.

There’s time for the big moments, of course, but also for the quieter ones. Your dad laughing with your friends. Your best mate getting emotional during the speeches. A quick cuddle with your mum. The two of you sneaking outside for five minutes.
