How to Prepare for a Newborn Photoshoot
Bringing your baby home is a complete blur of feeds, cuddles, tiny outfits, and wondering what day it even is anymore. So if you’re feeling slightly overwhelmed about preparing for a newborn photoshoot, you’re absolutely not alone.
The good news? You don’t need to have everything perfectly organised.
Newborn photoshoots are designed to be calm, flexible, and completely baby-led. My job is to guide you through it so you can relax and enjoy this tiny, fleeting stage without worrying about the small stuff.
If you’re already expecting and thinking about booking, you can view my newborn photography sessions here:

Here’s everything you actually need to know to feel prepared.
The Best Time for a Newborn Photoshoot
The best time for a newborn photoshoot is within the first two weeks after birth, ideally between 5 and 14 days old.
During this stage, babies are usually sleepier, curl up more naturally, and are still very settled from those early newborn days. This helps create those soft, cosy images everyone loves.
You can secure your newborn photoshoot in advance so everything is ready before baby arrives:
→ Book Your Newborn Session
We’ll pencil in your due date and adjust once baby is born. And if things don’t go to plan, that’s completely fine. Babies arrive on their own schedule, and your session will always be flexible around them.

How to Feed Your Baby Before the Session
One of the most helpful things you can do before your newborn photoshoot is to feed baby just before I arrive or just before we begin.
I usually recommend feeding baby in just a nappy beforehand. This keeps them comfortable, avoids unnecessary clothing marks on their skin, and helps us settle into the session smoothly.
Every baby is different, but this simple step often helps them feel more relaxed and sleepy for the session.
What to Have on Hand For Your Newborn Photoshoot
You don’t need to prepare much at all, but a few essentials can make things easier:
- Plenty of nappies, wipes, and muslins
- Extra milk if you’re bottle feeding
- A dummy/pacifier if your baby uses one
- A spare outfit for parents (just in case little accidents happen)
That’s it. Seriously. You’re not packing for a holiday, just a gentle couple of hours with your baby.
What to Wear for a Newborn Photoshoot
Simple is always best when it comes to outfits.
Soft neutral colours photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your connection rather than clothing. Think creams, whites, beige, soft greys, and muted earthy tones.
Try to avoid:
- Loud patterns
- Bright neon colours
- Big logos or branding
The goal is timeless, natural images that won’t feel dated in a few years.
Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable in. You’ve just had a baby, comfort wins every time.
Preparing Your Space for a Newborn Photoshoot
If your newborn photoshoot is at home, please don’t stress about making everything perfect.
Your home does not need to look like a magazine shoot.
The most important thing is natural light. Rooms with large windows and soft daylight work beautifully, so I’ll usually guide you to the best-lit spaces in your home.
A quick tidy of a few key areas can help keep images clean and timeless:
- Bedside tables
- Visible clutter or piles
- Bright plastic toys
- Wires and chargers
But honestly, real life with a newborn is expected. You don’t need to hide it all.
All newborn sessions are relaxed and can take place either in your home or in a calm studio setting depending on what feels best for you:

What Happens During a Newborn Photoshoot?
Newborn photoshoots are slow, relaxed, and fully led by your baby.
There’s no rushing, no strict posing schedule, and no pressure for things to go a certain way.
We work around:
- Feeding breaks
- Nappy changes
- Settling and cuddles
- Comforting baby whenever needed
Some babies sleep most of the session, others prefer to be held awake, and some switch between both. Every session looks different, and that’s exactly how it should be.
Your only job is to be with your baby. I’ll take care of the rest.
Don’t Stress About Getting It “Right”
If there’s one thing I want you to remember before your newborn photoshoot, it’s this:
There is no perfect way for your baby to behave.
They might cry. They might need feeding multiple times. They might want to be held the entire time. All of that is completely normal.
Nothing is “going wrong” if things don’t look perfectly calm the whole time.
Some of the most meaningful images come from the quiet in-between moments anyway.
Final Thoughts
A newborn photoshoot isn’t about perfection. It’s about preserving a tiny, short-lived stage of life that passes far too quickly.
You don’t need to prepare perfectly. You don’t need to have everything under control. You just need to show up with your baby.
Everything else will be taken care of.
